In design school, my favourite teacher made us simplify our work until most of it was gone. With a sparkle in her eye, she repeated the mantra (in her pristine, sadistic British accent, ad nauseam): "Simple isn't easy."
Despite gritted teeth, that lesson has stayed with me ever since: how can we convey the essence of something in the simplest, most impactful way? Is that line, shape or colour essential? Does it really add something just by being there? If it doesn't, take it out.
