Inspirations

Taking Aim is inspired by many summers spent exploring the French Riviera on foot, by paddleboard, sailboat and motorboat—while hiking, running and swimming my way along its spectacular coastline. Cap d'Antibes, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Paloma Beach and Villefranche-sur-Mer are among my favourite places to experience the Mediterranean. Weaving between sailboats, motorboats, catamarans and anchored yachts offered a unique perspective of life on the sea, where every outing revealed new moments of movement, colour and human interaction.

From paddleboarders and swimmers to yacht crews, families, sailors and adventure seekers making the most of every imaginable water sport and water toy, the Mediterranean becomes an endless stage for people-watching. Rather than documenting one specific place or moment, I wanted to capture the freedom, anticipation and joy of Mediterranean summers—the split second before a dive, the warmth of the sun, the endless blue sea and the quiet magic of life on the Côte d'Azur.

Creative Process

First, I immerse myself in summer, filling sketchbooks with fleeting moments, inspiring scenes and observations gathered along the Mediterranean. For Taking Aim, I first developed the composition on paper before moving to canvas, refining the balance between movement, geometry and negative space.

I then painted the original artwork in acrylic on canvas before adding hand-painted collage elements. Once the painting was complete, I collaged the minimalist white reflections onto the water, abstracting the reflections of the diver's white swimsuit into a series of graphic shapes that become part of the composition itself. The final artwork was carefully photographed and refined to faithfully preserve every colour, texture and detail in this framed art print.
