This mixed media painting on canvas was inspired by multiple trips exploring Naples, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri - from the sky, by boat and on foot. The shifting blue colour palettes of sky and sea, the landscapes, coastlines, and graphic nautical motifs along its breathtaking beaches, ports and towns.

Creative Process

This is a mixed media painting on canvas I made in stages. First, as always, came multiple trips around the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Naples; I hiked, took boats, swam, (ate too much), took videos, pictures, and immersed myself in everything. Along the way, in my sketchbook, I sketched all the landscapes and landmarks that inspired me on these trips. Finally I composed a graphic black and white drawing that mixed elements I found visually striking in a fictive composition: from the views of the Bay of Naples, the Vesuvius mountain volcano, calm seas and coastlines, and the graphic beach cabanas peppered all along the Italian coast. I printed the original sketch on canvas, and then layering acrylic paint, oil paint, and oil pastels, I painted and drew on top of the underdrawing, using different types of blue hues, from turquoise waters to fresh blue skies, that I witnessed across different seasons and temperatures. At the same time, separately from my canvas, on paper, I painted many shades of blue, which I then cut out to make the cabana stripes and windows. I then collaged the painted paper cutouts on top of the canvas painting. Et voilà - the Amalfi coast, as I see it when I close my eyes and piece together all the beauty of this incredible Italian region.
