Between the Waves | Framed Art Print

Between the Waves is a modern Mediterranean art print inspired by summer on the French Riviera and the changing view of the Côte d’Azur from the water. Deep ocean blues, turquoise, crisp white waves and a bold red sun create a minimalist coastal landscape, with a lone sailboat appearing between the rolling waves.

The composition brings together fragments of Cap de Nice, Cap Ferrat, Cap d’Antibes and Cap Martin to create an imagined Riviera landscape rather than one specific place. Graphic forms and saturated Mediterranean colours give the artwork a contemporary, minimalist feel while capturing the movement and perspective of being immersed in the sea.

Inspirations

The artwork was inspired by hours spent in and on the Mediterranean — swimming, paddleboarding and floating — watching the landscape continually disappear and reappear between the waves. From water level, familiar views become abstract: a stretch of coastline emerges, a sailboat suddenly appears on the horizon, then everything shifts again with the next wave.

Creative Process

The process began with observation — spending hours immersed in the sea, swimming, on a paddleboard or simply floating, watching the coastline shift as the waves continually revealed and concealed sailboats, yachts, people and fragments of landscapes.

From there came many sketches, combining those fleeting views and perspectives to construct a new, imagined composition. The final artwork was then painted in acrylic on canvas, building up the abstract waves, minimalist landscape and bold graphic forms. As a final element, the sailboat was created separately and collaged directly onto the painted canvas, adding another layer of texture and dimension.
