View from My Window in Winter is a diptych inspired by the view from my studio in Nice during the quieter winter months. Rather than documenting a specific landscape, the painting explores the intimacy of living with a place over time—watching its colours, light and atmosphere slowly shift from one day to the next until observation becomes memory.

Built around a restrained palette of warm neutrals, deep blacks and Mediterranean blues, the composition distills the landscape to its essential elements: snow-capped Alps, wind-swept palm trees, contemporary architecture and the open space of the sea. Simplified forms and layered collage create a balance between abstraction and representation, inviting the viewer to experience the landscape emotionally rather than literally.

Created using acrylic, collage and mixed media on canvas, View from My Window in Winter is an original contemporary diptych inspired by Nice, the French Riviera and the Mediterranean. It reflects the quiet beauty of winter on the Côte d'Azur—a season that reveals a calmer, more intimate side of a landscape often associated only with summer.

Inspirations

View from My Window in Winter was inspired by the landscapes of the French and Italian Rivieras, where the snow-capped Alps rise dramatically above the Mediterranean and the coastline unfolds through a succession of seaside towns, villas, coastal roads and hidden coves. From my studio in Nice, this ever-changing view became a daily source of inspiration, revealing new colours, shifting light and subtle seasonal transformations.

Throughout the year, tall palm trees punctuate the landscape, their organic forms contrasting with the strong horizontal lines of the mountains, sea and architecture. I was drawn to this balance between geometry and nature, permanence and movement, and to the quiet beauty that emerges through repeated observation.

Through a restrained palette, simplified forms and layered collage, I sought to distill these Mediterranean landscapes into their most essential elements, creating a contemporary interpretation of a place that has become deeply familiar. Rather than portraying a specific view, the diptych celebrates the atmosphere, scale and quiet intimacy of the French Riviera in winter.

Creative Process

View from My Window in Winter was developed in layers, beginning with a series of sketches and observations from my studio in Nice. Rather than reproducing the landscape exactly as I saw it, I simplified the view into its essential elements—the snow-capped French Alps, wind-swept palm trees, contemporary architecture and the open Mediterranean—creating a composition shaped by memory and repeated observation.

The background of each canvas was first painted in acrylic, establishing the sky, sea and distant mountains through broad areas of colour and subtle tonal contrasts. On separate sheets of fine art paper, I then hand-painted the palm trees, bridge and architectural forms in black acrylic before carefully cutting each element by hand.

Using collage and decoupage techniques, I layered the individually painted shapes onto the canvas to construct the buildings, windows, bridge and vegetation. This process creates depth, texture and a handcrafted finish while reinforcing the bold graphic forms and clean lines that have become central to my work.
