Summer on the Côte d'Azur turns the Mediterranean into a stage, where everyday moments unfold against an azure backdrop of sea, sky, sailboats and superyachts. 

From early-morning paddleboarders to swimmers, kayakers, cliff jumpers and people enjoying every imaginable water sport and water toy, life on the Mediterranean becomes a constant source of people-watching, movement and inspiration. In Taking Aim, a woman dives gracefully from the deck of a white yacht, suspended between stillness and movement in the split second before diving into the Mediterranean. Rather than capturing the dive itself, the painting celebrates the anticipation, freedom and quiet exhilaration that define so many Mediterranean summers.

Reduced to its essential elements, the composition explores the dialogue between colour, geometry, light and negative space, lingering in the suspended moment just before the calm water comes alive with a splash. The vivid blue sea, the crisp white yacht deck and the bright orange lifebuoy create a bold, graphic composition inspired by the timeless visual language of the French Riviera. A celebration of summer in the South of France, where the sea becomes a stage and everyday moments unfold like scenes from a film.

Inspirations

Taking Aim evolved from many summers spent paddleboarding along the Côte d'Azur, particularly around Cap d'Antibes, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Paloma Beach and Villefranche-sur-Mer—places I return to again and again. Weaving in and out of sailboats, yachts and catamarans, I often find myself quietly observing life unfold on the Mediterranean from a unique perspective. Around me, adventure seekers enjoy every imaginable water sport and water toy, tenders shuttle guests between superyachts and secluded beaches, and swimmers, sailors and sunseekers create an ever-changing choreography across the sea. I photograph, sketch and collect these fleeting moments, drawn to the effortless rhythm and energy of summer on the French Riviera.

Rather than documenting a single place or moment, Taking Aim celebrates the feeling of Mediterranean summers—the freedom of life on the water, the anticipation before the dive, and the spectacular theatre of everyday life that unfolds between sea and sky. It is a tribute to the Côte d'Azur, where the landscape is only part of the story, and the people who inhabit it become an endless source of inspiration.

Creative Process

Taking Aim evolved from many summers spent exploring the Côte d'Azur by paddleboard. Weaving in and out of sailboats, yachts and catamarans around Cap d'Antibes, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Paloma Beach and Villefranche-sur-Mer, I became fascinated by the ever-changing choreography of life on the Mediterranean—the people, the movement and the fleeting moments that make the French Riviera such an endless source of inspiration.

Back in the studio, those observations were distilled into a simplified, graphic composition. Beginning with charcoal sketches, I refined the scene to its essential forms before building the painting with layers of acrylic on canvas. Rather than recreating a specific moment, I combined memories, sketches and visual references to capture the feeling of being there. Once the painting was complete, I hand-painted the white reflections on the water separately before collaging them onto the canvas. These minimalist, abstracted shapes subtly echo the diver's white bathing suit, extending her presence into the Mediterranean while adding another layer of movement and depth to the composition. The carefully balanced geometry, expansive negative space and vibrant Mediterranean palette invite the viewer to linger in the quiet pause before the diver breaks the surface, transforming an everyday scene into something both timeless and cinematic.
