Sunrise Over Cap Ferrat was inspired by one of my daily rituals in Nice: sunrise swimming in the Mediterranean during the summer and rollerblading along the Promenade des Anglais in the colder months. Returning to this landscape day after day transformed it from a familiar view into a lived experience.

I'm fascinated by the distinctive light of the Côte d'Azur, especially in winter, when the lower sun creates vivid colours and contrasts across the Mediterranean. Rather than depicting the landscape literally, I reassemble the elements that stay with me—the rising sun, the sea, light reflected on water...  and the shifting blues of sea and sky—into a composition that evokes the essence of the place.

The painting began on the beach in Nice before being completed in my studio, where hand-painted collage elements were layered into the composition to create texture, depth and a bold graphic language.

Inspirations

One of the greatest gifts of being in Nice has been discovering the ever-changing light of the Mediterranean. I can't go a day without waking up early to watch the sunrise overlooking the sea. It has become a quiet ritual—one that never loses its sense of wonder.

In winter, the low sun creates dramatic contrasts, electric colours and brilliant reflections that dance across the water. By summer, the light becomes softer, warmer and more diffused, bathing the coastline in a gentle glow of rosé shades. Experiencing these subtle seasonal shifts day after day has transformed the way I see colour, light and place.

Rather than capturing a single sunrise, this artwork distills the essence of many mornings into one image—a memory shaped by observation, movement and the quiet rhythm of returning to the sea.

Creative Process

This artwork grew out of countless early mornings spent in movement, watching the sun rising over Nice and Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat. During the summer, I swim almost every day at sunrise, while in winter I often rollerblade along the Promenade des Anglais as the first light reaches the Mediterranean. Watching the changing light reflections dance across the water has become my quiet ritual, and I'm endlessly fascinated by the way the light shifts from one morning to the next - never the same, and always mesmerizing.

I began this painting on the beach in Nice at sunrise using acrylic and oil paint on canvas, immersed in the colours and atmosphere of the moment. Back in the studio, I continued the process by finalizing the canvas painting, then hand-painting the reflections on paper, cutting them by hand, and collaging them onto the canvas. These graphic fragments echo the shimmering movement of light across the sea, allowing lived experience, memory and observation to come together in the final composition.
