Inspired by many summers spent at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Paloma's View captures one of the most iconic coastal panoramas on the French Riviera. Beyond the quiet bay, gleaming white superyachts, sailboats, catamarans and pleasure boats gather offshore, all framed by the dramatic coastline stretching towards Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Èze, where towering clouds regularly spill over the cliffs and reshape the horizon. Closer to shore, stand-up paddleboarders, swimmers, floating air mattresses and beachgoers create a gentle choreography that unfolds across the blue Mediterranean throughout the summer.

Rather than depicting one exact moment, this original mixed-media Mediterranean seascape celebrates the French Riviera in layers. From the beach, there is always a show to watch. Your eye travels from sunbathers and waders at the water's edge to paddleboarders drifting across the bay, then out towards anchored superyachts, motorboats, catamarans and sailboats before finally reaching the dramatic cliffs of Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Èze, with Monaco and the Italian coastline disappearing into the distance beyond. The solitary figure floating on a stand-up paddleboard offers a quiet counterpoint to the scale of the landscape, inviting the viewer to slow down and simply look.

Created using acrylic paint and hand-painted paper collage on canvas, Paloma's View balances the timeless blue-and-white palette of the Mediterranean with crisp geometric forms, exploring the dialogue between graphic simplicity and atmosphere. Paloma's View was inspired by many summers spent at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and one of the most remarkable cross sections of the French Riviera. What fascinates me most is the way the landscape unfolds in layers. From the beach, your eye travels from sunbathers and swimmers to stand-up paddleboarders, floating air mattresses and waders, then out towards anchored superyachts, sailboats and catamarans before finally reaching the dramatic cliffs of Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Èze, with Monaco and the Italian coastline disappearing into the distance beyond.

I return to this bay again and again, across every season, because it never looks the same twice. Hundreds of boats gently turn with the wind, towering clouds reshape the horizon and the changing Mediterranean light transforms the atmosphere throughout the day. Rather than painting one specific moment, I wanted to preserve the pleasure of sitting there for hours, watching life unfold across one of the French Riviera's most iconic panoramas.

Creative Process

Although inspired by a real place, Paloma's View is not a documentary of one particular day or one particular view. It is a carefully constructed reinterpretation that brings together observations gathered over many visits to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, combining different seasons, weather conditions and moments into a single Mediterranean seascape. The composition was intentionally reconstructed to emphasize the calm horizontality of the yachts, sailboats and paddleboard against the organic movement of the clouds and dramatic cliffs, creating a dialogue between stillness and energy.

Swimming, stand-up paddling and sketching by the water became an essential part of the process. Back in the studio, I developed the painting in acrylic on canvas before refining it with hand-painted paper collage, introducing subtle graphic accents beneath the paddleboard and on the superyacht. These individually cut collage elements create rhythm, texture and depth while reinforcing the balance between organic forms, clean geometry and the layered beauty of the French Riviera.
