Some moments stay with us not because of what happened, but because of where they happened. Along the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, friends meet, couples pause, strangers cross paths, and travellers arrive and depart against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea. Most of these encounters last only a few moments before disappearing into the rhythm of the city. 

Meeting Point grew from countless walks along this iconic waterfront and my fascination with these fleeting encounters. I wanted to capture not only the quiet mystery between two figures, but also the unmistakable character of the Côte d'Azur: its luminous Mediterranean light, graphic contrasts, and the dialogue between the sea, sky and architecture. A plane leaves a white trail across the sky, quietly echoing the themes of arrival and departure that have long shaped this famous seafront. It is also the only collaged element in the composition, subtly reinforcing the idea of movement, travel and transience.

Rather than documenting a specific moment, I distilled the essence of the Promenade into a composition of strong horizontal lines, bold graphic forms and layered shades of Mediterranean blue. The relationship between the two figures remains deliberately ambiguous, inviting viewers to imagine their own story. More than a portrait, Meeting Point is an original contemporary painting that celebrates the quiet mystery of passing lives and the enduring atmosphere of the French Riviera.

Inspirations

I begin almost every morning on the Promenade des Anglais, before the city wakes. Whether walking, running, rollerblading or swimming, I've experienced this waterfront through every season, weather condition and changing light. I return again at midday to observe how the colours of the sea and sky transform beneath the Mediterranean sun, and often end my day there as the last light settles over the coastline. This daily ritual has made me deeply attentive to the subtle shifts in colour, atmosphere and human activity that define the Côte d'Azur. Meeting Point grew from these repeated observations, celebrating the quiet poetry of everyday life and the fleeting moments that make a place unforgettable.

Creative Process

This painting grew from countless walks, runs and rollerblade rides along the Promenade des Anglais, where I have observed the ever-changing rhythm of the waterfront and the shifting Mediterranean light over time. Using photographs, sketches and lived memories of the changing weather and wind, I developed a composition that captures the striking contrasts of a bright, windy day—the crisp light, deep shadows, layered shades of Mediterranean blue, and the interplay between movement and stillness.

After refining the composition through sketches, I drew it onto the canvas with charcoal before building the painting through multiple layers of acrylic. As a final touch, I hand-painted, cut out and collaged the plane onto the canvas—the only paper element in the composition—adding a subtle symbol of travel, arrival and departure.
