Inspirations

Where the Wind Turns grew from years spent observing the Mediterranean and my lifelong fascination with sailboats. I love the way their white sails catch the light against an expanse of blue, reducing themselves almost naturally into lines, angles and geometric forms, while the sea and wind around them remain fluid and unpredictable.

For me, sailing also carries a deeper meaning. It represents freedom, adventure, possibility and the pull of distant horizons—the feeling of moving towards something not yet known. My own experiences at sea have rarely been smooth sailing, which has only made the metaphor more meaningful. A sail cannot control the wind; it has to respond to it, continually adjusting to changing conditions while retaining its essential form.

The artwork brings these ideas together with memories gathered over years along Mediterranean coastlines: shifting winds, changing light, distant boats and landscapes that never appear quite the same twice. Rather than preserving one particular view, I wanted to capture what remains constant within all that change—the possibility of adapting, changing direction and continuing forward without losing your essence.

Creative Process

Like much of my work, Where the Wind Turns began long before I entered the studio. Years spent walking, swimming, sailing and exploring Mediterranean coastlines allowed me to observe the changing relationship between wind, water and light, while photographs, sketches and memories helped me collect impressions rather than document one specific place.

Back in the studio, I distilled these observations into a more graphic composition, reducing the landscape to strong horizontal bands, sweeping organic curves and the precise geometry of the sailboats. The contrast between the fluidity of the Mediterranean landscape and the crisp lines, angles and white sails became central to the composition.

For the original artwork, I painted the sea, sky and landscape in acrylic on aluminum. Elements of the composition were painted separately on fine art paper, carefully hand-cut and collaged onto the surface. The resulting work brings together expressive movement and graphic structure, organic forms and clean geometry—the contrasting visual languages at the heart of my practice.
