Inspirations

This blue and white Portugal artwork was created during road trip to Portugal, exploring the coastal landscapes, small towns, fishing villages and beaches from Lisbon to the Algarve, travelling along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline. The artwork was inspired and created by the sea, and is meant to evoke the peaceful serenity of a perfect travel moment found unexpectedly, while searching for an authentic, traditional Portugese meal.

Perched on a cliff by the water, between the blue sea and vibrant turquoise, cloudless sky, we found
this picturesque town square next to a remote fishing village, away from the more well known tourist destinations and trails.

The minimalist white house, white church and surrounding buildings were bathed in sunlight, the hot mid-day sun accentuating the shadows
and contrasts created by sunshine reflected on white walls. Charming, peaceful and quaint, the traditional town was sleepy, quiet and authentic. While the locals were eating lunch (most likely followed by a siesta), I sketched the architecture, buildings, sharp angles and ornate window and door details in the quiet afternoon, surrounded by a serene blanket of blues and the smell of sardines.

Creative Process

Using black ink and hand drawing in my travel sketchbook, I illustrated the scene with sketchy lines and crosshatching drawing techniques to convey the simplicity of the architecture and forms, the strong light and shadow contrasts and the minimalist building façade, which were lacking the usual Portugese tile patterns we’re so used to seeing on walls and buildings in Portugal.

Later, in my art studio, I used blue watercolour, gouache and acrylic paint to create the blue background, which to me evoke the feeling
I had of being suspended in a plane of blues between the vivid blue sky, the blue sea reflecting the sunlight and the white architecture of the town. I then scanned the original travel sketch and reversed the colours from black to white, creating a blue and white wall art piece that convey this feeling of the peaceful, quiet Portugese travel mood which inspired the artwork.
