Inspirations

I recently travelled to Venice, on one of my yearly Europe design cities inspiration trips. I'd visited this iconic, romantic Italian city before, but this time I went in late winter, where there were hardly any tourists, and with one goal on the travel itinerary: to devour art, architecture, design and, as always, food. This Venice in winter trip was a feast for the eyes, palette and soul. Without all the summer tourists and crowds, we walked the narrow streets and canals from early morning until late at night, absorbing the unique sights, history and hidden spots this beautiful city has to offer.

My early morning sunrise runs were greeted by silence, birds, and the sounds of waves and vaporettos moving slowly on the ever-present surrounding lagoons. My evenings were spent walking around with no itinerary, and marvelling at lights dancing on water, and the absolute zen and quiet of a city where we don't hear motors, scooters or cars.

This particular artwork captures the tranquil, reflective mood of this quieter, hibernating Venice. Instead of the usual hordes of tourists filling the Rialto bridge, on this March evening, there was a quiet buzz of whispered exclamations around this famous Venice landmark, but not enough people to take away from its beauty, scenery or architectural features, as on my previous trips.

Gondolas and vaporettos, umbrellas and chatter surrounded me, but I could enjoy the reflections of the beautiful bridge on water, boats moving quietly beneath its magnificent bridge, and people gazing at this picturesque scene; a calm, relaxed mood and feeling of gratitude for this perfect Venice moment surrounded by beauty and history around the Rialto Bridge.

The Venice travel art series are a graphic, monochrome, hand drawn and hand-painted Italy drawings using various mixed media techniques on paper, featuring iconic Italian cityscapes, Italian scenery, towns, architecture and landmarks that I created during over twenty years and over fifteen +++ trips to Italy - the country that keeps beckoning me back with its cultural richness, beauty, architecture, design, art, food and passionate people. I always sketch and draw what inspires me in my travel sketchbook to capture moments "sur le vif", and then turn these sketches into larger artworks, still keeping the spontaneity of line and gesture, when I return home from my travels.
