Inspirations

Off Duty was inspired by countless visits to Ruhl Plage in Nice, where I always find myself equally captivated by the iconic blue-and-white striped umbrellas and the lives unfolding beneath them. As both an artist and designer, I'm drawn to the bold graphic contrasts, rhythmic geometry and the horizon where the sea meets the sky, and the way they frame moments of everyday life along the Mediterranean. Rather than depicting a single scene, the artwork brings together memories, observation and the unmistakable atmosphere of the French Riviera.

Working from my own photographs and sketches, I reimagined the composition to emphasize the interplay of horizontal and vertical planes while creating a visual dialogue with its companion piece, On Duty – Ruhl Plage. Together, the two works juxtapose moments of leisure and work unfolding within the same landscape. Combining the vivid blues and windswept Mediterranean of winter and spring with the relaxed mood of summer, when the artwork was painted, Off Duty is not a literal depiction of Ruhl Plage, but a contemporary interpretation that captures what it feels like to spend time there.
