Inspirations

This painted Mediterranean seascape was inspired by what looked like a flawless, carefree summer day on the Med. That day, I was fully immersed in the Mediterranean lifestyle—having lunch with friends at a beach club overlooking this idyllic scene, just after returning from stand-up paddling. One of our boards had burst in the intense heat, leaving us stranded at an outrageously overpriced seaside restaurant. My friends—an architect and a manager at a well-known hotel group—had just arrived and were settling in to order.

Their starter, an extravagant tempura seafood dish served in an oversized, stunning blue ceramic bowl that echoed the surrounding landscape, arrived alongside chilled white wine. It was then they shared the news: they’d both been laid off due to corporate restructuring. And then, they cried.

The contrast between their grief and the absurdly lavish yet beautiful seafood bowl, set against the serene backdrop of the deep blue sea, graphic beach towels, and pristine white parasols, was striking—both literally and metaphorically. Their tears fell in a setting of almost surreal beauty.

I found myself torn—between consoling my friends and being mesmerized by the hypnotic charm of the Mediterranean: the sunlight playing on the water, the crisp air, the dance of light and shadow across the striped towels and shimmering sea.

To me, this painting captures the tension of living in paradise while life’s harsh realities continue to unfold. Yet, even amid sorrow, the Mediterranean retains its enchantment—achingly beautiful, always sublime. Even through tears.
