This artwork was inspired by the deep connection Canadians feel with the outdoors during the fleeting summer months. After long winters, there's a collective urge to be outside—to paddle along rivers, swim in lakes, explore canals, and simply bask in the greenery and light. Water becomes a constant presence, whether it’s kayaking at sunrise, drifting through rivers or sitting quietly by shore. These moments of stillness and movement, of solitude within vast natural spaces, are what I wanted to express. The small figure in the kayak is a reflection of that feeling—how humbling and peaceful it is to be surrounded by the flow of nature. This piece is a tribute to those golden summer days when time slows down, and every ripple, breeze, and reflection feels like something to hold on to.

Creative Process

This minimalist landscape artwork was hand painted with gouache and acrylic paint on paper, and then layered painted paper cutout shapes on top in a mixed media collage. The person in the boat silhouette was hand drawn on the final mixed media artwork with black ink.
