Inspirations

I recently returned to Venice on one of my yearly Europe design cities inspiration trips. I'd visited this iconic, romantic Italian city before, but this time I travelled in late winter, when there were hardly any tourists, and with one goal on the travel itinerary: to devour art, architecture, design and, as always, food. This Venice in winter trip was a feast for the eyes, palette and soul. Without all the summer tourists and crowds, we walked the narrow streets and canals from early morning until late at night, absorbing the unique sights, history and hidden spots this beautiful city has to offer.

My early morning sunrise runs were greeted by silence, birds, and the sounds of waves and vaporettos moving slowly on the ever-present surrounding lagoons. My evenings were spent walking around with no itinerary, and marvelling at lights dancing on water, and the absolute zen and quiet of a city where we don't hear motors, scooters or cars.

This particular artwork captures the tranquil, reflective mood of this quieter, hibernating Venice.

This was the view of the gondolas parked in front of the glamorous classic villas and palazzos on the Grand Canal across from Peggy Guggenheim's magnificent garden balcony across the water.

I always sketch and draw what inspires me in my travel sketchbook to capture moments "sur le vif", and then turn these sketches into larger artworks, still keeping the spontaneity of line and gesture, when I return home from my travels.
