Inspired by the beautiful Mediterranean bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer on the French Riviera, Front Row Seat celebrates the colourful rituals of summer beach life: long vacation days, sunbathing beneath striped umbrellas, swimming in turquoise blue waters and the simple pleasure of doing absolutely nothing.

From the elevated streets above Villefranche's old town, the beach looks like an idyllic stretch of golden sand and sparkling Mediterranean Sea. But during peak summer, it's a different story. The shoreline fills with sunseekers, colourful beach towels and umbrellas, and finding the perfect spot becomes something of a competitive sport.

There's a particular beach strategy that locals know all too well: arrive early, claim your spot before the crowds descend and make sure nobody gets between you and the sea. It's an unspoken rule of summer on the Côte d'Azur, and this woman has clearly mastered it.

Creative Process

Throughout the summer, I collect sketches, observations and fleeting impressions of everyday life along the French Riviera. From crowded beaches and colourful umbrellas to the changing light on the Mediterranean Sea, these little moments become the starting point for my paintings.

For Front Row Seat, I worked from these sketches and memories, experimenting with different arrangements and perspectives to develop the composition. I approached the final painting like a carefully cropped photograph, deliberately editing out the surrounding crowds to create an illusion of solitude in one of the Côte d'Azur's busiest summer beach destinations.

The composition focuses on a woman sunbathing beneath her striped beach umbrella, contrasting her vivid red swimsuit with the luminous turquoise blues of the Mediterranean Sea. I simplified the forms, refined the graphic shapes and balanced the negative space to capture the colours, light and relaxed atmosphere of summer in Villefranche-sur-Mer.

There's also a little ambiguity to the scene. Is she enjoying a quiet moment alone, or are those her kids splashing in the water? Is she waiting for someone, or simply enjoying a day of complete anonymity? By leaving the story open to interpretation, I wanted to capture something familiar about beach vacations: the luxury of finding your own little piece of paradise, even in the middle of the summer crowds.
