This painting was inspired by my frequent weekly visits, runs and plant stops through Cours Saleya market in the heart of the Old Town of Nice, France - I'm obsessed with the bright colours, stripes, fresh produce, and the graphic shapes everywhere you turn. In this painting I wanted to bring together many of the striking elements that I love in one composition that is filled to the brim with bright colours, organic shapes and good vibes.

Creative Process

I run through Cours Saleya market in the early morning, and find myself there a few times a month shopping for flowers and plants for my little urban garden. Often distracted and inspired by the vivid colours of fresh local produce, fruit, food, flowers, and the striped market stalls contrasting against the sun-lit building façades of Vieux Nice, I take too many photos for my icloud storage. I composed this market scene from photos, memories and sketches. I first drew the re-imagined, reconstructed composition on canvas with charcoal, and then painted in acrylic, oil pastels and markers, adding layers upon layers of colour, highlights and contrast for the final painting on canvas.
