Inspired by years of exploring Italy’s Mediterranean coastline, The Other Riviera – Liguria is a colourful framed Italy art print bringing together memories of Liguria, Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast in one imagined coastal landscape.

Originally painted by hand on canvas, the artwork blends colourful Italian fishing villages, geometric architecture, small boats and luminous blue water with the dramatic seaside landscapes of places such as Portofino, Manarola, Riomaggiore, Positano and Amalfi. Rather than depicting one destination, it reimagines the Italian coastline through memories gathered across many journeys.

Inspirations

In this artwork, I wanted to capture and convey the vibrant colours and relaxed, blissful yet awe inducing, energizing feeling of experiencing both the Amalfi Coast ( Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Praiano, Minori, Maiori, and Atrani) , and also journeying through and the Italian Riviera, from the end of the South of France to Cinque Terre and onwards to Capo Corvo.

Creative Process

The original painting began with my travel sketchbooks, photographs and memories collected along Italy’s Mediterranean coastline.

Working with acrylic, oil and hand-painted paper collage on canvas, I simplified the architecture and landscape into bold geometric forms while retaining the texture and imperfections of the painting process. Individual windows, boats and architectural details were painted, cut by hand and layered into the composition, allowing different places along the Italian coast to become one imagined landscape.

The framed art print preserves the colour, painterly texture and collage details of the original artwork, translating the handmade canvas into a contemporary Italian wall art piece.
