I've often imagined an extraterrestrial seeing the sea for the very first time, with no understanding of sunlight or reflections. Would they see millions of tiny living creatures dancing, jumping and playing across the water? I like to think so. To me, each reflection has its own movement, rhythm and personality. And they're always happy :)

The Mediterranean Sea has always been an endless source of inspiration for me, particularly the way sunlight transforms its surface into a constantly shifting world of light, colour and reflections. Along the Côte d'Azur, the light has an extraordinary, almost silvery quality. It's easy to understand why generations of artists have been drawn here to paint, and why they keep coming back.

I've often imagined what someone seeing this phenomenon for the very first time might make of it. Without understanding the science behind it, perhaps those millions of tiny dancing reflections would look like living creatures, each with a personality and a life of its own.

It's this sense of curiosity and wonder that inspired A Life of Their Own. A reminder that even the most familiar things can become extraordinary when we look at them a little differently.

Printed on heavyweight matte paper with a smooth, non-reflective finish.

Printed on FSC-certified or equivalent paper sourced from responsibly managed forests.

Creative Process

For A Life of Their Own, I wanted to distill the movement of sunlight across the Mediterranean Sea into its essential elements: rich blues, simplified white sailboats and playful reflections. Using geometry, colour and negative space, I translated this organic, ever-changing scene into a bold, minimalist composition.

For the original painting, I began by building the sea in layers of acrylic on canvas board. The sunlight reflections were painted separately on paper, then individually cut into hundreds of tiny shapes. Using tweezers and a great deal of patience, I carefully positioned and glued each reflection into place, building the composition one piece at a time. Literally ;)

The sailboats were also created using hand-painted and cut paper, allowing me to achieve crisp silhouettes and razor-sharp lines for their masts.

There's an interesting contrast between the fleeting, unpredictable nature of light on water and the slow, deliberate process of recreating it by hand. This combination of acrylic painting and collage brings together two sides of my creative practice: the artist's fascination with nature and the art director's instinct to simplify, compose and give visual order to what I see.

Once completed, the original painting was professionally scanned. I then cropped and subtly reworked the composition, adapting its original square format to a narrower portrait orientation while preserving the essence and balance of the artwork.
