Inspirations

The first step in my creative process is travel. I discovered the stunning city of Budapest long after I had become familiar with most of Europe’s iconic capital cities. I felt that it was one of the most beautiful European city I had ever seen: the interplay of the lights, water and architecture, the majestic buildings and castles overlooking the Danube river, and the eclectic mix of architecture, design, art and cultural influences due to its long history dating back to the Romans, Ottomans and the Austro-Hungarian empire culminate in a timeless urban center filled with history and beauty - where delightful landmarks and surprises are around every corner.

I immersed myself in Budapest's fascinating history, architecture, art, culture, design, food and sights, with my sketchbook and camera always in tow. I hand-drew this large black and white cityscape on to large paper, using pen and ink. I wanted to capture the beautiful spring breezes, fresh Danube air, beautiful views overlooking the Danube and the bustling liveliness of the city. I chose this perspective seen from the famous Fisherman's Bastion castle as my vantage point for this landscape drawing, for its architectural shapes, scale of buildings and people, and incredible views overlooking the Danube river.

Creative Process

During my travels to Budapest, I drew, sketched and photographed everything: streets, architecture, landscapes and people in my travel journals. When I returned home to my studio, I used large paper, graphite pen and black ink to illustrate this Budapest cityscape - I wanted to capture both the rich heritage of Hungarian history, and the movement and dynamism of people, modernity, design and spring breezes. When the final monochrome city art work was completed, I photographed it and digitally edited and fine tuned the details, colour contrasts and highlights so it could be reproduced into a large canvas art print, while keeping its sharp, graphic quality.
