Inspirations

This artwork is a self portrait whose story began when I was in my early twenties, living in South Korea. After finishing university in Canada with a degree in Criminology, I was going through an existential life phase where I was questioning what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I certainly knew what I didn't want, and that was to pursue a life that was safe, and to me, boring. And so, I went as far as I possibly could, in search of adventure, to South Korea.

I had no clear plan, but travel and novelty were pulling me to Asia, and I followed my intuition. And so, I ended up teaching English abroad and what was supposed to be a short trip turned into three years of living in Korea. During those 3 years, I travelled and discovered this incredible exotic continent, met many amazing and inspiring people, and had many fun and exciting adventures. It was also a highly creative period, where stimulated byt the excitement of novelty and exoticism, I re-connected to my art, which I had put on pause during my safe and predictable university studies.

I read, drew, painted and illustrated voraciously, inspired by the new sights, smells, novelty and beauty bombarding me daily. I also drew and painted portraits of the people around me at that time - I suppose you could call this my portrait phase, during which I also documented my own ever-changing moods, in hundreds of self portraits in varied mediums and techniques.

As anyone who has lived abroad will tell you, changing lives is accompanied by diverse and constantly changing emotions, culture shock and mood fluctuations.

This particular self portrait is one of my favourites, because to me it captures all the twists and turns, ups and downs, ambiguity and many, many feelings that were changing by the nano-second during my first 8 months living in a faraway land.

Creative Process

The original portrait artwork was hand drawn on very large smooth paper with graphite pencils, which allowed me to maintain the sharp details of facial features.

I wanted to capture the subtleties in the eyes and lips and face details, while maintaining confident lines and sharp contrasts and drawing subtle yet soft shading for the mid-tones.

To reproduce this original large portrait artwork onto a portrait print, I photographed the original drawing, fine-tuned the details and enhanced the contrasts and highlights, ensuring a high quality wall art print .
