Inspirations

My inspiration for this Copenhagen city drawing artwork was the culmination
of a week spent in Copenhagen with a friend and collaborator. We went to absorb Danish design, architecture, and to discover the city in the spring. Ever since I was young and read Hans HansChristian Andersen’s stories, Copenhagen became a mythical
destination I had to see for myself.

So when my friend spontaneously asked me 5 days earlier if I wanted to hop on a plane and go to Copenhagen on a whim, I didn't think twice before saying "YES"! I almost cried when I saw The Little Mermaid Statue overlooking the water for the first time. Yes, she’s there! I loved everything about this city: the happy people, relaxed yet lively atmosphere, the mix of modern design and historic architecture. To me, Nyhavn Canal was the perfect culmination of so many things: colour, water, sunshine, happiness, where historic houses, bustling bars, and lively restaurants frame the scene, and the Danish love of life comes alive. Creative Process

I first drew many sketches in my travel sketchbook during a beautiful and inspiring week I spent visiting Copenhagen, of anything and everything that inspired me – usually while drinking a strong coffee and probably eating a Danish… or two.

When I returned home to my art studio, I re-drew this artwork of the iconic Nyhavn canal on larger paper, which allowed me to draw more details and fully capture the lively atmosphere and energy of the happy ambience of a Saturday afternoon spent there.

I used pen and black ink on paper, and then I scanned the artwork and digitally edited it, cleaning up the details and enhancing the contrasts so it would be perfect when digitally printed.
