Inspirations

In my early twenties, I lived in South Korea for three years while teaching, painting and travelling around Asia, exploring exotic places, people and cultures in this part of the world.

I was very fortunate that my sister also was a traveller with a serious case of wanderlust, so she was also living her Asian travels journey in tandem with mine.

This watercolour portrait was created after we spent a winter in Taiwan. At this point we were both a little nostalgic and homesick, especially missing snow and beautiful Canadian white Christmases, far away from our family and loved ones.

We spent our Christmas on a beach in Taiwan that year, and the following year was in Vietnam, followed by one last holiday abroad spent in Korea. In this painting, I wanted to capture this feeling of freedom, adventure, exoticism, while also acknowledging the nostalgia, melancholia and slight alienation that can come with being outside our comfort zones, in new lands, far away from home. I also wanted to capture the beauty and depth of my sister, who I was so lucky to share this three year life adventure with.
