This colourful Portugal artwork was inspired by the architecture of houses, buildings, and intricate design and architecture details I encountered throughout my travels across the country. From Lisbon to Porto, Coimbra, Setubal, Lagos, the Algarve and beyond, I found endless inspiration in Portugal’s art, design, and craftsmanship of eclectic patterns and traditional azulejo tiles, mesmerized by the geometric motifs that adorn walls across the country, from north to south.

Creative Process

I sketched the window details in black ink on paper, using a crosshatching technique to capture the depth, texture, and contrast of the architectural elements. The intricate lines emphasize the interplay of light and shadow, highlighting the character of traditional Portuguese design.

I then painted a rich blue background using watercolor, gouache, and acrylic, aiming to recreate the sensation of being immersed in the serene blues of Portugal—the vast sky, the shimmering sea, and
the crisp white facades of sunlit buildings. This layered approach helped me capture the colours, lines and patterns of my travels.

To further enrich the composition, I collaged
hand-painted azulejo-inspired patterns onto the blue wall, incorporating the geometric and ornamental beauty of Portugal’s iconic ceramic tiles. By blending
these traditional motifs with a minimalist, modern aesthetic, I sought to create a timeless artwork that reflects both the heritage and contemporary spirit
of Portuguese design.
