Inspirations

My passion for sunrises was born out of a new habit of
waking up early during Covid. Pre-dawn mornings were my quiet time to connect with calm – before the news and noises of the world turned on. I was lucky to
live by the water in Griffintown, Montreal –  between the Vieux Port de Montreal and Atwater Market. By 9:00 am, these waterfront areas would be filled with people, all seeking fresh air and a break from reality.

So, seeking space, quiet, and a sense of grounding, at 6:00 am I would go for a run, then sit down on the shore of the water and watch the ducks glide over the Lachine Canal while the sun came up over the famous Five Roses sign. The sky transformed before my eyes,
every morning a little different, signalling a new day. In those calm morning moments, surrounded by nature in an vibrant urban city center that was temporarily on pause, I had a lot of time to reflect, ponder and be present.


The flow of the water, the rising sun, and nature waking up reminded me that beauty, peace, calm and possibility are there all the time – but the stillness of a morning sunrise makes it much easier to connect to them.

Creative Process

I created this sunrise artwork by drawing with pencil on paper, followed by hand painting with acrylic and gouache on paper. As a last step, I colour blocked sections using paper collage.
