Inspirations

This mixed media painting was inspired by Nice in the height of summer, when the beaches are alive with a mix of tourists and locals stretched out on the warm pebbles. Whether seen from the Promenade des Anglais, Castel Beach, or high up on the Colline du Château, the late afternoon sun casts long, sharp shadows, carving the scene into bands of gold, blue, and deep contrasts. Everyone’s skin is sun-warmed and golden, the breeze carries the salt air, and the wind kicks up just enough to turn the wave breakers into
frothy white lines. The sea shifts into an even deeper, more electric blue, while those daring to linger at the shoreline find themselves either chased away or drawn in by the sudden crash of waves. It’s that fleeting mix of calm and energy, elegance and playfulness, that I wanted to distill into this composition.

Creative Process

For this French Riviera beach artwork, I began by gathering photographs, short videos, and on-the-spot impressions of the beach in Nice, focusing on its vivid colours and lively summer atmosphere. Back in the studio, I sketched a new composition that stripped away distractions, emphasizing contrasts, scale, clean lines, and a flowing sense of movement and vivid blues, from the shoreline to the horizon. I painted the sky, sea, and and beach (omitting the pebbles on purpose;) on canvas using oils and acrylics, then shaped the texture of three-dimensional waves with a spatula, giving the water depth and energy.

On separate sheets of thick and fine art paper, I hand-painted the sunbathers in acrylic, adding
subtle highlights with an oil marker, and rendered the red-hulled sailboat in the same way. Each figure and the sailboat were then carefully hand-cut, contouring
around their silhouettes. I experimented with their placement across the painted scene until the balance felt just right, then fixed them in place through collage.

To finish, I applied a satin spray varnish, sealing the surface and protecting the vibrant Mediterranean blues, warm sands, and bright details for lasting impact.
