Inspirations

I explored the Italy's beautiful Amalfi coast on foot, car, train and boats, travelling from Naples to Sorrento before moving on to the coastal towns of Positano, Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello and Praiano. Along my walks, hikes, boat rides, gelato and limoncello breaks, my sketchbook was a constant companion.

This black and white Amalfi coast artwork is my interpretation, in one image, of the essence of so many breathtaking snapshots imprinted in my heart, condensed into a few key elements: graphic lines from the striped patterns of the beach cabanas and the graphic stilts supporting them, geometric angles and of the roofs and mountain, and organic, rounded gestural lines of the calm sea waves and the volcano smoke floating gently up into the sky.

Creative Process

This black and white Amalfi Coast travel art print offers a contemporary and elegant twist on a classic scene, where millions of travellers pass through to soak in the colours and landscapes of this famous Italian region, known for its incredible beauty.

Instead of taking a colourful approach, I have chosen to portray this famous Italian coastal destination in black and white, focusing instead on the graphic shapes and contrasts and allowing every stroke of the pen to bring the coastal beauty to life in different and unexpected way: emphasizing the organic tranquility of the sea, the graphic shapes of the beach cabanas and mountain, and the dynamic movement of the smoke billowing up from the mountain in the background.

The first step in creating this Italy artwork was, of course, travelling to the Amalfi Coast. I quickly sketched many seascapes, landscapes and snapshots that inspired me during my travels, in my travel sketchbook. When I returned home, the final artwork was hand drawn using an ink pen on large premium paper. I photographed the final composition, cleaned up the details and enhanced the contrasts to ensure its reproduction into a high quality art print.
