This blue and white Portugal artwork was created during a road trip through Portugal, exploring the coastal landscapes, small towns, fishing villages, and beaches from Lisbon to the Algarve along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline. Inspired by the sea, the piece captures the peaceful serenity of an unexpected travel moment—one that unfolded while searching for an authentic, traditional Portuguese meal.

Perched on a cliff overlooking the water, between the deep blue sea and a vibrant turquoise, cloudless sky, we discovered a picturesque town square beside a remote fishing village, far from the usual tourist trails. The minimalist white houses, a white church, and surrounding buildings basked in the midday sun, their bright surfaces casting sharp shadows and striking contrasts. Charming, peaceful, and unspoiled, the town exuded an authentic, sleepy atmosphere. While the locals enjoyed lunch—likely followed by a siesta—I quietly sketched the architecture, capturing the crisp angles, intricate window and door details, and sunlit façades, all enveloped in a serene expanse of blues and the salty scent of sardines.

Creative Process

Using black ink and hand-drawing in my travel sketchbook, I illustrated the scene with sketchy lines and crosshatching techniques to capture the simplicity of the architecture, the stark light and shadow contrasts, and the minimalist building façades—noticeably lacking the traditional Portuguese tile patterns so commonly seen on walls and buildings.

Later, in my art studio, I painted the background using blue watercolor, gouache, and acrylic, aiming to evoke the sensation of being suspended in a vast plane of blues—the vivid sky above, the shimmering sea below, and the white architecture in between. I then scanned my original travel sketch and inverted the colors from black to white, transforming it into a blue and white wall art piece that reflects the peaceful, quiet essence of Portugal and the travel mood that inspired this artwork.
