Inspirations

I first discovered Cinque Terre after having lived in Asia for 3 years in my twenties. Missing Europe, I booked a long trip to Italy before returning to Canada. Before TripAdvisor and Google Maps, there was word of mouth: my traveller friends had told me about this beautiful little Italian travel destination that was not well known at the time; a paradise by the sea filled with colourful towns, little fishing ports and hidden beaches. So I went to see for myself, and it did not disappoint.

I hiked between the five clifftop villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, and admired the protective castle of each little town. I basked in the blue sea surrounded by dancing reflections of the sun, napped on the little beaches (at the time there were fewer tourists and you could actually see the sand!), and ate all the pasta.

I returned to Liguria many times since that first trip, and ventured further south to the equally beautiful Amalfi coast and its postcard perfect destinations: Camogli, Cinqueterre, Portofino, Sorrento, Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello, Positano, Nocelle and Capri, with their bright vivid colours, vertiginous cliffs, colourful houses, lemon groves, and always the endless expanse of blue sea and blue sky.

What stayed with me are the colours: a vibrant combination of happy, vibrant sunny hues that make the heart smile and fill your eyes with tears. Once I was back home in my art studio, I needed to express this beauty with colour. I painted this colourful landscape on a large canvas, mixing acrylic paint, oil painting and pastels.
