This black and white drawing was inspired by Alcoutim, a small inland town we might never have visited if not for Thibeault—Jeremy’s old pilot friend turned full-time sailor. Five years after our sailing misadventure in the Canaries, we reunited with him and his Czech girlfriend, moored on a river dividing southern Portugal from Spain.

The town’s approach is picture-perfect, with Alcoutim on one side and a whitewashed Spanish village on the other. History runs deep here—back in 1371, a peace treaty was signed on a boat in the river, yet to this day, no bridge links the two sides.

Alcoutim is a hidden gem where we heard only Portuguese and feasted on local delicacies like the hearty Cossido. Cobblestone streets, flowering gardens, orange groves, and blue-tiled murals create an authentic, quintessential Portugese charm and tranquility.
