Inspirations

This black and white Venice city poster print captures the tranquil, reflective mood of a quieter, hibernating Venice. I recently returned to Venice on one of my yearly Europe design cities inspiration trips. I'd visited this iconic, romantic Italian city before, but this time I travelled in late winter.

Without all the summer tourists and crowds, we walked the narrow streets and canals from early morning until late at night, absorbing the unique sights, history and hidden spots this beautiful city has to offer.

This Venice city art print depicts the famous Grand Canal, as seen from the Ponte dell'Accademia, one of four bridges to cross it in Venice, Italy. The bridge links the island districts of Dorsoduro and San Marco.

On the right of the canal we can see the elegant and majestic rounded dome roofs of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, while gondolas and boats take locals and tourists around this magnificent city built on water. A testament to creativity, beauty, innovation, resilience and standing the test of time.

The Venice travel art collection is a graphic, monochrome, hand drawn and hand-painted Italy art series using various mixed media techniques on paper, featuring iconic Italian cityscapes, Italian scenery, towns, architecture and landmarks that I created during over twenty years and over fifteen +++ trips to Italy - the country that keeps beckoning me back with its cultural richness, beauty, architecture, design, art, food and passionate people.

I always sketch and draw what inspires me in my travel sketchbook to capture moments "sur le vif", and then turn these sketches into larger artworks, still keeping the spontaneity of line and gesture, when I return home from my travels.

Hand drawn using pencil, pen and India ink, this Venice artwork is an architectural illustration that captures the dynamic energy on the Grand Canal, Connecting the sestieri (districts) of San Marco and San Polo.
