Inspirations

The first step in my creative process is travel. I discovered the stunning city of Budapest long after visiting most of Europe’s iconic capital cities. I felt that it was one of the most beautiful European cities I had ever seen: the interplay of the lights dancing on water at night, the eclectic architecture, the majestic castles overlooking the Danube river, and the eclectic mix design, art and cultural influences due to its long history dating back to the Romans, Ottomans and the Austro-Hungarian empire culminate in a timeless city print filled with history and beauty - where delightful landmarks and surprises are around every corner.

I immersed myself in Budapest's fascinating history, architecture, art, culture, design, food and sights, with my sketchbook and camera always in tow. In this cityscape, I wanted to capture the beautiful landscape views overlooking the Danube river and the bustling liveliness of the city. I chose this perspective from the famous Fisherman's Bastion castle as my vantage point for its scale and juxtaposition of buildings and people as well as incredible views overlooking the Danube river.

Creative Process

While travelling in Budapest, I photographed and sketched everything in my travel sketchbook: streets, architecture, landscapes and people. When I returned home to my art studio, I used large paper, graphite pen and black ink to draw this Budapest cityscape - I wanted to capture the rich cultural heritage of Hungarian history, and the movement and dynamism of people, modernity, design and spring breezes. When the final monochrome artwork was completed, I photographed it and digitally edited and fine tuned the details, colour contrasts and highlights so it could be reproduced into a timeless poster print, while keeping its crisp and contemporary aesthetic.
