Inspirations

My inspiration for this work was nature. Intrigued by all the unique tropical flora and landscapes I discovered over many hikes in tropical destinations travelling around the world and while living by the Mediterranean coast and obsessed with the beauty of the simple (sometimes giant) shapes of succulents, cactus, agave (to name just a few), the beauty of nature never fails to amaze and inspire me.

I wanted to create a series of nature-inspired abstract art that would bring this nature effect indoors in a modern and unique way.

The canvas substrate uses a coated fabric: a blend of cotton and polyester, providing a weight of approximately 300-350gsm/110-130lb cover and a thickness of 350-400 microns, giving you a sturdy and durable product.

Creative Process

This artwork was created while I was painting a different artwork series inspired by nature. I created large plant compositions with black ink on paper. First I drew the plant shapes, then I painted them in black ink, and then I cut them out using decoupage techniques. When I finished the process, I fell in love with the graphic cutouts on the leftover paper, which had the painted brush strokes around the outlines, surrounding the empty spaces. I collected all the large cut papers left over and I layered them testing various combinations. Once the final composition was in place, I pressed all the painted layers together between two sheets of glass to create a large textured artwork. I photographed it, then I finalized and edited the art digitally so it could be reproduced as a large print, while still keeping its tactile layered effect.
