    Inspirations

    This printed artwork is a culmination of my many trips on the French and Italian Rivieras, my love of timeless elegance, and devouring vintage photographs, postcards and fashion magazines in book markets in Paris, Nice and the South of France.

    The Côte d'Azur has such a rich history of fascinating, talented and glamorous women who lived, visited, created and relaxed here - from Coco Chanel, Brigitte Bardot to Dalida.

    Not to mention the Italian Riviera, right next door, with its glamour and beautiful Italian people, actresses, culture and romantic allure.

    I wanted to create an artwork that encapsulates this sense of French Riviera cultural history, pays homage to the iconic women who contributed to its glamour, and also conveys a sense of elegance and carefree Riviera escapism...while maintaining a sense of elusive mystery that leaves space for the viewer's imagination in this beautiful Mediterranean setting.

    Creative Process

    This Mediterranean art print was handcrafted by hand in multiple phases and art mediums. I began by drawing in pencil and paper many versions of the drawing, until I was happy with the overall composition. Then I moved on to very large textured paper: using charcoal and pencil, I hand drew
    the under drawing, and painted a thin layer of watercolour for the background shading. Once I finalized the landscape and figures composition, I used a series of graphic markers to draw in layers, adding textures, contrasts, highlights and details, bringing a realistic dimensionality to the art, while also keeping a modern edge in terms of the
    graphic use of lines and tonality. After photographing the final original artwork,
    I used digital editing software to fine tune and perfect the details, enhance contrasts and highlights to ensure that the original quality would translate beautifully on this wall art print.
