There's something hypnotic about the way sunlight dances across the Mediterranean Sea on a sunny day. Along the French Riviera, the interplay of light, water and movement transforms the deep blue sea into a constantly shifting stage, where millions of tiny white reflections appear, disappear and seem to take on a life of their own.
Inspired by countless moments observing the Mediterranean across seasons and sunlight, A Life of Their Own explores this familiar phenomenon from an unexpected perspective. I've often imagined an extraterrestrial arriving on Earth and seeing the sea for the very first time. With no understanding of sunlight or the physics behind these reflections, how would they interpret what they're seeing? I like to imagine millions of tiny living creatures dancing, jumping and playing across the water. The reflections become characters, each with its own movement, rhythm and personality. And to me, they're always happy :)
For this painting, I wanted to capture what strikes me most about these moments by stripping away the non-essential elements. Simplified white sailboats, an expanse of gorgeous Mediterranean blues and hundreds of individually painted and cut paper reflections come together in a bold, graphic composition. The sailboats were also created using cut paper, allowing me to achieve the sharp, precise lines of their masts against the sunlight. The contrast between these clean, geometric forms and the playful movement of sunlight on water creates a balance between simplicity and intricate detail.
A contemporary Mediterranean seascape inspired by the light, colours and visual poetry of the Côte d'Azur. Through a modern, minimalist and distinctly graphic visual language, the painting distills the organic movement of nature into its essential forms, capturing the essence of a fleeting moment rather than reproducing it literally. An invitation to see something familiar through a different lens, where even the smallest reflections seem to have a life of their own.
