First Light was inspired by the daily sunrises that became part of my life over the many months and years I spent on the Côte d'Azur. Whether swimming before sunrise in summer or running, rollerblading and walking along the coast throughout the quieter months, watching the first light spread across the Mediterranean became a daily ritual that never lost its sense of wonder.

Each morning offered a different experience. Changing seasons, shifting light and ever-changing winds transformed the horizon into an endless series of colours, reflections and quiet moments before the beaches filled, sailboats set out and the rhythm of the day began.

Rather than capturing one particular sunrise or destination, I wanted to preserve the feeling of these mornings: the optimism of a new beginning, the anticipation of a day filled with possibility, beauty and discovery. First Light is a celebration of the timeless magic of sunrise on the Côte d'Azur.

Processus créatif

Like many of my artworks, First Light began long before I entered the studio. Over the many months and years I spent on the Côte d'Azur, I filled sketchbooks with observations gathered during early-morning swims, runs, rollerblade rides and walks along the Mediterranean. Rather than documenting one particular sunrise, I collected memories of changing light, shifting colours, distant sailboats and shimmering reflections, gradually building a visual vocabulary inspired by the rhythm of the sea.

Back in the studio, I translated those impressions into a minimalist mixed-media composition on paper. Using layers of gouache, soft pastels and wax crayons, I built rich colour and texture before introducing hand-painted collage elements to create additional rhythm and depth. Reduced to bold graphic forms and balanced geometric shapes, the final artwork captures the warmth, optimism and energy of a Mediterranean sunrise. It was then carefully photographed and refined to faithfully preserve every colour, texture and detail in this framed art print.
