When I was 8 years old, my family and I immigrated to Canada. I will never forget flying over New York city at night: the lights from the airplane were magical, and went on forever, defying my comprehension of limits and space.

Flying over New York City was my first glimpse, at 8 years old, of not only North America, but my first landing in an airplane, my first traveller birds' eye view, my first American City, first skyscrapers, and seeing the island of Manhattan at night was the first time I witnessed a metropolis lit up from above. The city vibrating with lights - seen in this way, at night, was the most magical and grandiose view I had ever experienced.

We stayed with family friends in New York for a few days, and I remember experiencing a kind of expansiveness and energy that was totally new to me: the dizzying height of skyscrapers, the wide avenues that went on forever and everyone moving SO fast to get somewhere.

Since then, I returned almost every year of my life to get my fix of NYC. Whenever I need a jolt of creativity and a reminder that anything is possible, I go to New York. From the Art Deco architecture, skyscrapers, historic buildings, modern street art, museums, culture, art and creativity to the hot dog stands and disorderly chaos of people hustling through the well-ordered street grids, this artwork is my love letter to the city that never sleeps.

This graphic New York abstract artwork is a mix of hand-drawn illustration, painting, spray paint and collage techniques that capture that first feeling I had when I set foot on its grid for the first time.

First I hand drew, painted and sprayed the separate elements: the New York skyscrapers were drawn using gold ink, the city map was meticulously hand drawn using pencil, pen and ink, the NYC lettering was spray painted, and the graphic colour blocked shapes were cut out of paper I painted using gouache and acrylic paint.

Using decoupage techniques, I cut out the individual mixed medium components, and re-assembled them into this final composition. Once the elements were in place, I glued them onto canvas, and applied a matte varnish to preserve the colour saturation and keep the visual elements intact.

I scanned the original collage art, and digitally enhanced the contrasts, lines and details to prepare a premium quality, metal framed art print ready to hang on your wall decor.
