Inspired by years of travelling the Mediterranean coastline, Postcards from the Mediterranean brings together memories of sea, sky, sailboats, swaying palm trees and sun-drenched architecture into a single imagined landscape. Rather than depicting one specific destination, the artwork assembles moments collected across many journeys, celebrating the colours, light and timeless atmosphere that define life by the sea.

Created from my original mixed-media collage painting, this colourful Mediterranean art print combines bold graphic forms with layered textures, celebrating the relaxed rhythm of Mediterranean living. Like a collection of postcards gathered over many years, a surreal white sailboat appears suspended beneath a towering palm tree, its strong shadow leaving the scene open to interpretation: it may be floating on luminous blue water, resting on a sunlit shore, or existing somewhere between the two. Around it, fragments of architecture, glowing sunsets and shifting horizons evoke the feeling of discovering a new destination with every glance.

Inspirations

Postcards from the Mediterranean is inspired by years of exploring the Mediterranean coastline on foot, by car, boat and paddleboard—while hiking, running and swimming my way through its landscapes. From every vantage point, across changing seasons, shifting light and countless destinations, I collected memories, impressions and moments that eventually found their way into this artwork.

Rather than documenting a single place, I wanted to capture the feeling of travelling through the Mediterranean—the excitement of setting off, the calm of life by the sea, and the collection of experiences that stay with us long after we return home. Like postcards gathered over many years, each element tells part of a story. Together, they become a celebration of travel, memory and the enduring beauty of the Mediterranean.

Creative Process

This artwork evolved through multiple layers of painting, drawing and collage before reaching its final form. Inspired by years of sketching while travelling, I began by composing a series of graphic studies that distilled my favourite Mediterranean memories into their essential shapes, colours and atmosphere.

For the original artwork, I combined gouache, acrylic, pen and ink, coloured pencils, soft pastels and oil pastels, building the composition gradually through layered marks, textures and washes of colour. Rather than recreating one place, I assembled fragments collected across different journeys into a single imagined landscape, allowing memory and imagination to guide the final composition. Once the artwork was complete, I carefully photographed it and refined the tonal range, colour and contrast to faithfully preserve every detail in this framed art print.
