Mado le Niçois | Art Print

Mado le Niçois is a colourful Nice, France art print inspired by the seagulls, fish market and vibrant streets of Vieux Nice on the French Riviera. A bold palette of Mediterranean blue, bright red, warm ochre, pistachio green and crisp white brings together striped awnings, colourful storefronts and sunlit façades, with one of Nice’s larger-than-life seagulls taking centre stage.

Inspired by early morning runs along the Promenade des Anglais and walks through Old Town Nice, the artwork captures the colour, character and humour of everyday life on the Côte d’Azur. Bold graphic forms and saturated Mediterranean colours transform a familiar Nice street scene into contemporary French Riviera wall art—a playful portrait of the South of France and one of its most unmistakable local birds.

Inspirations

Inspired by everyday life in Vieux Nice, Mado le Niçois celebrates the colour, character and slightly chaotic energy of the Old Town. Striped awnings, weathered façades, the fish market, narrow streets and bright Mediterranean light provide the backdrop, but the real inspiration is the enormous seagulls that seem to preside over it all.

Loud, fearless, opportunistic and full of attitude, they have become part of the personality of Nice for me. Mado is both a portrait of one of these larger-than-life local birds and a playful tribute to the humour, colour and character of life on the French Riviera.

Processus créatif

Mado le Niçois began with observation—walking and early morning runs through Vieux Nice, taking photographs, sketching and collecting details that caught my eye: colourful storefronts, striped awnings, weathered façades, fish stalls, shadows and, of course, the ever-present seagulls.

Rather than reproducing a single photograph, I combined elements from different moments and viewpoints, taking the parts I found most interesting and inventing a new composition. I wanted to make the seagull the star—to capture not just the bird itself, but the attitude and larger-than-life presence these local characters have in Nice. After working through the composition in sketches, I drew it directly onto canvas and built the final artwork in layers of acrylic paint, simplifying shapes, intensifying colours and playing with light and shadow.
