Inspired by the colourful café terraces and famous Cours Saleya market in the heart of Old Nice, Apéro, Cours Saleya is a vibrant art print celebrating the timeless ritual of apéro on the French Riviera. Striped awnings, turquoise shutters, sunlit façades and figures gathering outside cafés come together in a colourful scene inspired by everyday life in the South of France.

Created from countless walks through Vieux Nice, the artwork brings together the details that stayed with me most: the bold red-and-white awnings, warm ochre façades, market stands, café terraces and strong shadows cast by parasols in the Mediterranean sun. Rather than depicting one specific view, I reassembled these familiar fragments through memory to capture the colour, energy and relaxed rhythm of life on the Côte d’Azur.

This painting was inspired by my regular strolls, runs, and plant pit-stops through the Cours Saleya market in the heart of Old Nice. I’m endlessly drawn to the bold colours, striped awnings, fresh produce, and the graphic shapes that pop up around every corner. With this artwork, I set out to bring all those eye-catching details together into one vibrant composition—full of colour, organic forms, and feel-good Riviera energy.

Processus créatif

I often pass through Cours Saleya in the early mornings and find myself wandering back a few times each month to pick up flowers and plants for city garden. I'm constantly sidetracked (and creatively sparked) by the bursts of colour—fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, and striped stalls set against the warm façades of Vieux Nice. I always end up taking more photos than my iCloud can handle.

This market café scene came together from a blend of those snapshots, memories, and on-the-spot sketches. I sketched the reimagined composition directly onto canvas with charcoal, then brought it to life using acrylic, oil pastels, and markers—layering colour, contrast, and light until the piece felt full of rhythm and sunshine.
