Between the Waves | Art Print

Between the Waves is a modern Mediterranean art print inspired by summer on the French Riviera, days spent at sea and the changing view of the Côte d’Azur from the water. Deep ocean blues, turquoise, crisp white waves and a bold red sun create a minimalist coastal landscape, with a lone sailboat appearing between the rolling waves.

Inspirations

I spent a lot of time in the Mediterranean — swimming, paddling and floating — watching the Côte d’Azur from the water. I became fascinated by how the landscape constantly shifted with the movement of the waves and my own changing perspective: swimmers, yachts, boats and fragments of coastline would disappear from view, only to suddenly reappear somewhere between the swells. I wanted to capture that sense of movement and discovery — the way the sea continuously hides and reveals what surrounds you. The sailboat plays with that idea, emerging almost unexpectedly between the waves, as though you’ve just caught sight of it. Between the Waves grew out of those fleeting moments and the experience of seeing the Riviera differently from within the sea itself.

Throughout the summer, I sketched my views from the water, capturing the shifting waves, boats, swimmers and fragments of coastline as they appeared and disappeared around me. From this perspective, the landscape never appears all at once — each passing wave creates a new composition, revealing something for a moment before obscuring it again.

Back in the studio, I used those sketches and memories to reconstruct the experience on canvas, bringing together fragments of Cap de Nice, Cap Ferrat, Cap d’Antibes and Cap Martin into an imagined Riviera landscape rather than one specific view. I built the composition in layers with acrylic paint, playing with graphic forms, perspective and the rhythm of the waves to recreate that sense of movement and discovery. The sailboat was hand-painted separately, cut out and collaged onto the canvas as a final element, appearing almost unexpectedly between the waves. The result is a layered Mediterranean landscape somewhere between observation, memory and imagination.
